Vijayawada Metro: the approved phase 1 and the Amaravati question
The metro that gets built first serves Vijayawada. An Amaravati extension exists in the long-range DPR, not in the approved phase.

Phase 1
The Government of India approved phase 1 in December 2024 as a light rail system with two corridors: Gannavaram (airport) to Pandit Nehru Bus Station, 25.9 km with 22 stations, and PNBS to Penamaluru, 12.76 km with 12 stations. Land acquisition orders for 91 acres in NTR and Krishna districts were issued on 30 January 2025 and civil construction bids worth ₹4,150 crore were invited in July 2025. The approved DPR covers three lines and 74.2 km in total.
Amaravati
An earlier revised plan envisaged a 66.2 km network spread across Gannavaram, Vijayawada and Amaravati in three phases. That Amaravati phase has not been approved. The airport master plan circulated in 2025 mentions a metro-linked terminal, again as a plan. Our advice is to treat metro access to the capital as a 2030s possibility and to look instead at the Seed Access Road, the BRTS corridor and the railway line, which are funded.

Will the metro reach Amaravati?
Not in the approved phase 1. An Amaravati corridor exists in earlier planning documents but has no approval or funding as of 2026.
