Vijayawada Metro: the approved phase 1, and whether it reaches Amaravati
The metro that gets built first is for Vijayawada. A line to Amaravati is in the long-range plan, not in the phase that has been approved.

Phase 1
The Government of India approved phase 1 in December 2024 as a light rail system with two corridors. The first runs from Gannavaram (the airport) to Pandit Nehru Bus Station: 25.9 km with 22 stations. The second runs from PNBS to Penamaluru: 12.76 km with 12 stations.
Orders to acquire 91 acres in NTR and Krishna districts were issued on 30 January 2025. Bids for civil construction worth ₹4,150 crore were invited in July 2025. The approved DPR covers three lines and 74.2 km in total.
Amaravati
An earlier revised plan showed a 66.2 km network across Gannavaram, Vijayawada and Amaravati, built in three phases. The Amaravati phase has not been approved. The airport master plan shared in 2025 mentions a terminal linked to the metro, but that too is only a plan.
Our advice: treat a metro into the capital as something that may come in the 2030s. For travel today and in the next few years, look at the Seed Access Road, the BRTS corridor and the railway line, which have funding.

Will the metro reach Amaravati?
Not in the approved phase 1. An Amaravati line appears in earlier planning documents, but it had no approval or funding in 2026.
