2014 to 2015: choosing and securing the site

2019 to 2024: pause, three capitals, protest

Questions people ask
When was Amaravati founded?
The foundation stone was laid on 22 October 2015 at Uddandarayunipalem by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The site had been chosen in September 2014 and land pooling began in January 2015.
Why did Amaravati stop for five years?
The government elected in 2019 proposed three capitals in December 2019 and passed a law in 2020. The law was withdrawn in November 2021, the High Court ordered the capital to be developed in March 2022, and full-scale work resumed only after the June 2024 change of government.
