The Amaravati international airport: what is decided and what is only reported
The airport is the project people talk about most, and the one least settled. On this page we keep the official steps apart from the master-plan pictures that are shared around.

What is official
- March 2025: the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation called for consultants to prepare a Technical and Economic Feasibility Report and a 35-year concept master plan for a greenfield international airport at Amaravati (and another at Srikakulam).
- 2025: the state's plan for seven new airports includes Amaravati, along with Dagadarthi, Kuppam, Srikakulam, Nagarjuna Sagar, Ongole and Anantapur.
- The Phase 2 land pooling orders list a greenfield international airport among their purposes, with the airport land expected in a later pooling round. Pooling for the railway and the Inner Ring Road has since started in Mothadaka, Kantheru and Tadikonda, but no airport land has been approved. See the new pooling round.
- August 2026: the feasibility report was reported as final, and the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation asked the Civil Aviation ministry for site clearance. The plan described is 4,618 acres through land pooling, with a first phase of ₹4,419 crore plus ₹1,087 crore of trunk works, built as a public-private partnership. No site clearance has been reported since.
- 26 September 2026: Minister P. Narayana said about 5,000 acres near Ravela would be needed, and about 20,000 acres of pooling in all including roads and services. He said a Cabinet decision was expected. GMR, Tata, Adani, Vinci and Fairfax were reported to be interested. These are statements. Nothing has been approved or notified.
The government's project pipeline
The Department of Economic Affairs PPP pipeline lists the Amaravati airport at pre-DPR stage, with an indicative cost of ₹4,700 crore. That is a planning step. It is not an opening date and it is not a final land notification.
What is reported but not notified
In November 2025, accounts linked to APCRDA shared a master-plan summary. It describes 4,618 acres near Ravela in Tadikonda mandal, next to the NH-544G expressway, with a 4,000 m runway able to take Code 4F aircraft. The plan runs in five phases over 60 years. The first phase is 2,643 acres with 22 aircraft stands and 6.3 million passengers a year, at about ₹3,409 crore, growing over time to 105 million passengers.
These are planning figures. When we checked on 7 October 2026, no land had been notified at Ravela and the Cabinet had not decided. A January 2029 opening date seen in some listings is not backed by any operating approval.
The airport you can use today
Vijayawada Airport at Gannavaram is about 45 km from Velagapudi by road. It has had international status since May 2017, with a 3,360 m runway and an interim terminal opened in 2017. Its first international flight left for Singapore on 4 December 2018. A Vijayawada Metro line from Gannavaram into the city is part of the approved phase 1.
