Roads and bridges today

  • NH-16 (Chennai–Kolkata) passes Tadepalli and Mangalagiri; the Kanakadurga Varadhi, now 2.6 km long, carries it across the Krishna into Vijayawada.
  • NH-65 (Machilipatnam–Hyderabad) meets NH-16 at Vijayawada; the planned IRR crosses NH-65 twice and NH-16 twice.
  • Vijayawada–Amaravati road (Undavalli–Penumaka–Uddandarayunipalem–Rayapudi) is the everyday route; the Seed Access Road parallels it.
  • Guntur–Thullur road via Ananthavaram and Sakhamuru serves the southern villages.
  • Krishna bund road from Prakasam Barrage is being widened to four lanes with a divider (CRDA decision, August 2024).

Expressways in planning

  • Hyderabad–Amaravati Greenfield Expressway: 298 km, six lanes, access controlled, about 2.5 hours between the two capitals; 118 km in Telangana and 180 km in Andhra Pradesh, extending to Machilipatnam port; ₹25,000 crore committed by the Centre; NHAI finalising the DPR in early 2026. A semi-high-speed rail corridor is planned alongside.
  • Bengaluru–Vijayawada Expressway: 518 km, six lanes, passing near Amaravati; parts under construction.
  • NH-544G: the expressway stretch near Ravela cited in airport planning, scheduled for December 2027 completion in those reports.
  • Outer Ring Road: 189 km around the region, in land acquisition. See Outer Ring Road.

Questions people ask

How do I reach Amaravati from Vijayawada?

Take the Vijayawada–Amaravati road across Prakasam Barrage through Undavalli and Penumaka to Uddandarayunipalem and Velagapudi, about 20 km, or the Seed Access Road once its Undavalli link opens. APSRTC runs buses from Pandit Nehru Bus Station.
