Kondaveeti Vagu and Pala Vagu: the flood problem and the ₹1,586 crore answer
The capital sits on a floodplain drained by two seasonal streams. Anyone buying low ground in Rayapudi, Venkatapalem, Nelapadu or Mandadam should understand the drainage plan before the price.

The problem
Kondaveeti Vagu rises in the Kondaveedu hills and crosses the capital to the Krishna; Pala Vagu drains the northern villages. When the Krishna is high the streams cannot discharge, and the core villages flood. A World Bank environmental assessment in 2018 sized the flood works; a pump house at the Kondaveeti Vagu outfall with a 5,000 cusec capacity was completed in September 2018 as part of a ₹2,163 crore plan. In August 2025 the Kondaveeti Vagu inundated parts of the capital region for the second time in a year.
The programme
- 3 Dec 2024: ₹1,585.95 crore sanctioned for Pala Vagu and Kondaveeti Vagu development, three new reservoirs and three flood-prevention packages funded by the World Bank and ADB.
- Aug 2025: reports said the reservoir tenders were still pending, delaying the works.
- Jun 2026: the Amaravati Development Corporation was overseeing drainage and flood works on both streams, including removal of obstructions to flow in the Pala Vagu between Rayapudi and Venkatapalem.
- The government complex towers are laid out along the Pala Vagu, which is being turned into a landscaped blue-green corridor.

Does Amaravati flood?
Parts of the core villages have flooded when the Kondaveeti Vagu backs up during high Krishna flows, most recently in 2024 and August 2025. A ₹1,586 crore reservoir and channel programme funded by the World Bank and ADB is under way to address it.
